Category: Let's talk
Hi, I have an international group on messenger called the differently abled social society.
It is for disabled people, their disabled friends, their family and carers. If your interested
in joining it, please private message me on the zone.
This is a joke, right? Because I can't say "differently-abled" with a straight face.
Second what Voyager said.
Third. Always makes me think of odd, or weird/naughty situations.
Laughing.
I think you're thinking of "differently endowed".
No. Abiled.
Suppose you wer say 3 legged?
Maybe you could fly.
Some folks can walk on there hands, and my list could go on all night.
Laughing.
But, the poster here's serious. You started this though.
Smile.
I'm with Voyager.
That expression is so 1990s, and IMHO a bit weird. Of course, I'm not terribly down with the academic / social service descriptions of us.
Name it what you want. But what do you hope to accomplish? There's already this site, apparently Facebook groups, Vorail, other places where disabled people tend to congregate. I'd say you may want to establish how yours is different.
Plus, the other aspect is lots of people don't really get into those mass Messenger groups and messages. I kinda hate it when I get roped into some of these, to be honest, and took me awhile to figure out how to make them go away. Messenger on the phone is sort of like text messages, and if you have a ton of people on there messaging back and forth, could get difficult fast.
Maybe use Zello or something not used by people keeping in touch with family and friends.
Carers? Ugh!
I agree with the poster of number 9. Tell uis what makes your group special. Not that I'm inclined to join, but, What do you hope to do, OP of Number 1?
I think the term carers is a UK thing. Not sure what it means: parents? Hmm I must be a career, got my 22-year-old daughter living at home again.
Someone tell me what in the name of all precious, is wrong with being just straight-up "BLIND?" I got tired of finding all the labels I could put on me. Even Mental health professional trainers don't like all the labels.
If we spend all day finding "Labels," we won't get any work done. Sorry, if my tude is old-fashioned, but, I never liked all these "Handles." I'm human, and I have things that complicate my life, if I let them. So? If I find labels for all them, I'll have more things to identify me, that will make me dizzy, trying to find which one works, for which hour of the day.
I got things to learn, like computers. I got people that need me to teach them. I got friends, and a life, and no time to be "Differently Abled."
Peace to you, and may you someday be happy with just your name.
Blessings In Christ,
Sarah
caregivers in the Us, like PCAs.
Yeah, definitely not for me, and Leo has a good point. hahaha! I love those
questions Leo. I definitely don't like the lets get the disabled and their families
involved, type of things. it sounds like one of those disabled organizations which
are trying to baby people and normalises this.
As if you change the name of the condition, somehow you change the condition.
I am not "differently abled" thank you very much. Why anyone in their right mind would even use such a term, especially someone who is probably disabled him or herself, is beyond me.
agree with Chelsea. Differently-able or any similar terminology makes me physically ill.
Yeah, purely a condescending phrase. Hearing it makes me feel as though someone's just patted me on the head and called me "Sweetie."
/sweetie. Oops. Sorry, I'm differently abled. Perfect excuse I say.
Laughing.
Yes, but can you be differently disabled? What about samely abled?
Was Cain differently Abeled?
We would like to pre-board those passengers in need of special assistance. Cripples!
I can tell you've been listening to this George Carlin skit.
Why sure.
I'm differently disabled. I'm a man with a hot girl only on my left side, and a cold man on my right.
Confusing
Laughing.
Indeed, my Voyaging friend.
That title is a mouthful, lol. Good luck with this though.
hahahaha! guys!
When I saw this again, I thought, what on earth is differently abled? really? I
am afraid I don't really understand. I mean how am I abled any differently, if
you were to take the literal definitions? I am pretty intelligent if I was to say,
maybe not the most, but hey, I don't know the answers to those, maybe poster
1 can tell us? heh!
There was this post on this other site I went on, maybe it's like her saying that
blind people are gifted with blindness? I still don't buy that either. I still don't
get what gift we are gifted either.
what is differently abled suppose to mean rather. I wish we can edit posts.
I've heard George Carlin use that term. All it means is we're all different. I can do things you can't do, you can do things I can't do. We're all differently abled. Lol!
isn't that just normal though? Everyone is different and individualistically
talented. So, you're really not saying anything at that point. You've said nothing
at this point. Everyone is different and have different talents and no one is the
same. haha!
As to the sense here. We perceive the world as we do, but our ability is not
different. So, that's not saying much either.
Exactly Rachel. That is ultimately the point. We are not weird, or unable, we are all differently able. So, you are right, it is nothing new, but the idea that you, no matter how smart and capable you are, are equal to someone who is sighted, is a foreign concept to a lot of people.
It is the politically correct way of saying disabled. Ha, this is trash but what do I know?
I told ya I can fly. Is that differently abled?
Laughing.
You can edit post. Before you post it check that bock that says something like well, you'll see it.
Read your bad typing, change it to worse, then post it.
Laughing.
I guess I don't like that phrasing differently able, was what I was trying to say,
Yeah, I totally get what it means, it just baffles and amuses me on their
reasoning. I know they're trying not to offend or whatever. I've heard that
before!
Go ahead, offend me. I'm blind.
I mean, if you think about it, there's really no better description.
I am the same way. The truth is the truth and if it hurts well, maybe you have
issues with coping with reality. You'll just have to learn to deal with it. I don't
think anyone making it any softer or more cushioned is going to help you, that
is, if it doesn't harm you first. Get use to it, life isn't fair.
I agree. I think the problem is that today, the truth can land your ass in court. Sad isn't it?
Yes, because everyone is now so sensitive, and correct and so much about suing
you if they're not happy with you.
Just ask James Damore.
It's quite sad.
here, here!
